Comminos Studios Presents: Warped

On May 26th during Harlingen Art Night Nydia @_nydia invited several artists to present their art work at an exhibition called Warped. With the space hosting Warped being Comminos Studios @comminosstudios they held several pieces and sculptures for the community to see. With the theme "Warped" the pieces, mediums, and the varying styles these artists use really brought the theme of the exhibition together. With the exhibition only being for that day, I wanted to go out and experience it for myself!

Here is what the artists involved had to say,

Joshua Castillo @ yoshuacastle

How was it being a part of this exhibition?

It was great to be asked to be included, I don’t really do to much painting or art recently and am trying to get back into it, feels good that people can connect wit my new works

Could you describe your art style and the pieces you chose to showcase today?

My art style is mostly about color and the actually application of the media, weather it be scratching with the but end of a spray can or rubbing down an entire crayon, color combinations, shapes and forms

The pieces are just some of my more recent work, no particular reason on picking them, they are just more current

How was it being a part of this exhibition?

First off, I am glad to have been given the opportunity to be a part of a wonderful Group exhibition with other local talented artists! I have always admired @comminosstudio and was so excited when asked if I was interested in being part of this show. A big thank you to Nydia Salinas for curating, creating and being a supporter of the arts

Could you describe your art style and the pieces you chose to showcase today?

The two pieces I chose to include in this show were my Horsehair worm parasitism and Cordyceps Ignota infection sculptural pieces.

A summary of my pieces:

My current work emphasizes on Parasitism and Fungal Infections that occur

among living organisms. A natural occurrence: these parasites often kill or use

other living organisms for their own benefit. Although cruel this occurrence is

also beautiful in its own way. I want my work to also highlight the ecological

roles that these parasites play in ecosystems while also creating symbolism in

my artwork to bring awareness to both ecology and the stigma around mental

health. My favorite material to work with is Ceramic and Organic Materials, I

also enjoy incorporating my own or hair from loved ones to symbolize this

connection we share with all living organisms.

How was it being a part of this exhibition?

I feel very grateful to Nydia Salinas and humble to be included in this exhibition. It's been a while since I showed my work in a physical place. I was very interested in seeing how my work would interact with the other artists' pieces and the space itself.

Could you describe your art style and the pieces you chose to showcase today?

Well, for the pieces I selected for this exhibition, my art style has changed and evolved a lot. It is inspired by the psychedelic artwork movement, alchemy art, and art nouveau, and challenging myself to work with color palettes I tend to avoid. Most of the sketches for these works were made during my breaks while teaching, I didn't think much of them at the moment, but I decided to take the ideas further. Musa del Oculos was the first one of this series. It was made as an example for my Design 1 course and really enjoyed the outcome, so I decided to do more of this type of work.

These works are the evolutions of my way of seeing life and trying to understand what is the real truth, how can we maintain ourselves while we are bombarded with many things each day. It is my escape from reality and everything that hurts. Each piece has their little story, which are bits and pieces of myself that I don't talk about much since I don't fully understand who I am. Well, this is what I can think about now, but most likely, it will change in a couple of month from now.

How was it being a part of this exhibition?

I am honored for being part of this exhibition. It is always good to connect with fellow artists and know more about their art practices. I want to thank Nydia Salinas for her invitation and the Comminos for hosting this exhibition.

Could you describe your art style and the pieces you chose to showcase today?

My art style is chaotic, accidental, unintentional. I work with photos from archives, vintage photos, and I use this erratic way of putting elements together. I like the aesthetic of old photocopies I like to use it on my pieces.

How was it being a part of this exhibition?

It was such an honor to be invited alongside other amazing artists. I'm really grateful more people had the opportunity to see my sculptures in person. This is my first group exhibition outside of a school, so I was really excited to bring out my pieces and connect with the community.

Could you describe your art style and the pieces you chose to showcase today?

My art style is definitely inspired by Chicano Culture and the early 2000's. I loved the idea of putting so much personality and detail into a singular sculpture. My figures are a big representation of me, and growing up into the creative outlet I portray today. Every hand painted detail gives my characters their own unique selfhood.,

How was it being a part of this exhibition?

Estoy aqui hoy porque Nydia me vio en mi primer solo show en Brownsville. Nos connectamos por Instagram desde alli.

Could you describe your art style and the pieces you chose to showcase today?

Peanut Knorr @peanut.knorr

How was it being a part of this exhibition?

Nydia invited me to the exhibition after I posted one of my latest pieces on Instagram and she said "im planning this during art night, an art show and I think your pieces would fit" I told her I've never done this before and she told "don't worry, just bring your stuff and we'll see where it goes" It all came out of the blue. I've been wanting to try something like this, I've just never had the opportunity. I'm happy that she reached out and gave me a spot

Overhearing Peanut Knorr speaking about his work he says,

He begins explaining a piece,

Como este de aqui simple estuve jugando con el como unas dos horas. Asi es m mas moviendole aqui para aca poniendo los colors, hasta que al fin medio algo que me gusto and I start building off of that.
