Looking through Nebula's work he creates visual art, music, and he creates music as well which you can find on his Instagram @nebuladult which includes his Youtube channel in his bio as well. As mentioned earlier going through his work he'll post sketches, doodles and so on, but his sketchbook will be filled to the brim with vibrant colors, characters, and words. Even if its just on singular word he'd make it come to life such as his visual piece "Go To Sleep" making it feel as if someone sprinkled sleeping powder onto my eyes. This is the work of this week's local feature Esai Balderas, @nebuladult.
Starting with a little bit about Esai he shares what he's been doing to keep himself busy recently "I’ve been trying to keep myself sane by watching movies and enjoying whatever weird or cool art you can find online (cookin’ n’ paintin’ n’ drawin’ n’ makin’ n’ movin’ n’ shakin’ to be exact.)" Cooking is definitely something I want to experiment more with, but besides also watching more movies I've been reading more. Esai continues by sharing his local favorite businesses and artists "I’ve got a couple close, personal friends that I’d also really love to give a shoutout to here are their Instagrams: @bodyjewelrybydom, @mar721o, @naive4ever, @jesell_e | I’ve had the pleasure to work with each of these people closely and have learned and had so much fun creating the things we did. I’m endlessly grateful for them, and can’t wait to continue working with them!" It's always great to learn from others and just having the experience to grow your bond with someone one way or another. I'll be sure to check out the names provided as well. Thank you to Esai for the kind words as well "shoutout to ya’ll for doing stuff like this and helping amplify voices all around us. It’s an incredible feat, and ya’ll are prevailing. <3"
From the multiple works Esai creates which one came first and which one does he prefer? He says "music has always been a big part of my life, while I had only learned to love and appreciate visual art back in high school. It was only after I learned how to edit videos that I was able to finally put the two together. I’d say making music is a little easier, but both are so rewarding and extremely fun!" I used to edit videos, but I wasn't that great at it actually, but I do enjoy writing. Although unlike Esai I am not able to put the two together.
From his interests from music what about his other work? Let's say, what about the art he puts upon his sketchbook. From filling up the entire page and the decisions on what gets added on there as he explains "My room is very small, and since there isn’t really too much space at my 'desk' I like to draw on my bed. I have a great, big collection of markers from past birthday gifts from all of my cool, supportive friends and family members, so using all sorts of funky, mismatched collections of colors really do help inspire my tired brain. Once i grab a couple, I’m ready to start spewing all over my page." I used to write these blogs on my bed, but I switched it up to my desk and I could say the markers are the artists I get to interview and then share my thoughts on their answers. Although having the "funky, mismatched collection of colors" really adds character/charm to these knowing that there isn't exactly a plan to the colors wanting to be used and what it gets is what it gets due to the "mismatched collection" must be an interesting surprise each time.
Starting with his process before sketching he continues by saying "when I draw in my notebooks, my goal is to really fill them up as much as I can. I’ve got a few filled up, but I seriously need to practice more. I love making portraits and thinking about my favorite lines in songs and poems and movies n’ stuff like that" I recall Esai doing portraits awhile back and seeing the finished product of those who acquired one was amazing! They came out really well especially with the details when it came to specific features. If you do want to see more of Esai's work and a page that is filled I would recommend going to his account @nebuladult. As mentioned even the words feel like they come to life due to the "Go To Sleep" as an example or the "woah" and "mails here" on one of his most recent posts. It's a bit indescribable, but it goes really well with what is drawn and the colors used. That reading it alongside seeing the image its like I gave a voice to the character while reading it.
From all his work created does Esai have a favorite piece if so which one? He says "There is one specific pencil drawing of a hand that I had drawn to de-stress myself, and it helped a lot" Well the important this is that it helped Esai in a way and that these activities can be used for more than just "fun." They can used to de-stress and just escape from anything just for a moment. The best part in my opinion might just be the feeling afterward a de-stresser or seeing everything poured out if its something hands on related.
From his music to his sketchbook is there anything else he would like to do as he shares "I recently started getting more into digital painting, 3D graphics, and back into animation. I hope to become a better musician and wrap my head around proper audio engineering. I’m very excited to see the possibilities ahead of me, and hope to keep making sick shit" From "animation" to "proper audio engineering" I can see these two going to together very well such as the video editing mention earlier. As he also mentions "digital painting" and "3D graphics" he continues by saying "drawing on paper with a pencil or marker is way easier to me than drawing on my computer. My art tablet doesn’t have a screen on it, so the disconnect from my hand to the screen is a bit challenging, but being able to choose any color, use any sort of brush, and have a plethora of tools to edit your work is soooooo nice. Other than that, photo/video editing are very rewarding in their own right. There are pros and cons everywhere, but I love being able to create with it all!"
If he could fill up a page on his sketchbook with anything what would it be as he shares with response "I’d want to fill a couple of pages with some strange and beautiful looking people. It’s the best way to relax at home" I can see how beautiful it would look with the "mismatched" markers and the words that would be added as well.
From the sketches to the words added to his sketchbook what would be a phrase Esai like to bring to life as he says "1 specific phrase I’d like to create a nice typography edit for would probably be “Ce qui est ouvert, est à être” (“That which is open is to be”) It’s a Stereolab lyric from the song “Refractions in the Plastic Pulse” that really spoke to me at the time i heard it.
Esai shares thoughts on the local businesses/artists of the valley,
"I love all the support other artists have so readily available for you. There is so much kindness and warmth to all people here, and I’m happy all of us can send the same $10 around to each other when we commission one another lol"
