"I Love Spiky Shit!"

This week's feature is Jes! Jes @iced.out.halo is an artist, inline skater, and a drummer. From the sharp edges, grayscale, black n white monochrome set pieces with at times the usage of the primary colors. Jes follows her own color style/art style, but don't expect to see the same thing due to her art work being based around what she currently enjoys so it stays forever changing. Besides their art work check out the bands they are a part of which you can find on their bio!

We begin by asking about their artwork how would Jes describe it as she explains it by saying "Having fun, dope, and chillin'" and honestly if you're literally just creating what you want and going off on what you like then hell yeah it's fun! What could be better than creating fun art work and posting dope inline skating videos? I continue by asking Jes to explain what it means to them on what it means for it be "fun" as she says "I'd say like the complexity of the design and artwork and the colors used for it." In terms of complexity just following the edges, the lines, and the tip of the spike or wrecking ball there's a lot to take in. Especially when it comes to the shading Jes implements into their work in addition to the grayscale...it just combines perfectly. In the words of Jes what complexity means as they responded by saying "personally I love shading like chrome. I try to take influence from that into the artwork. Intentionally sometimes I don't follow the correct shadows here and there, but I do it intentionally because it just pops out like that."

When it comes to colors I see repeated colors such as dark colors, subtle whites. Are these colors Jes enjoys? "What's the word (I think it's called achromatic colors) kinda like when the colors aren't too saturated. I just try to make stuff that's easy on the eyes. Nothing too saturated." It is soft on eyes. I enjoy taking my times looking at a piece and just looking at details.

When it comes to their artwork how have they changed since they started to now as they say "usually it goes with what I'm obsessed with at the time and currently I'm into video game art work so I try to take influence from that. Back then it was stuff I was consuming online or from the day the day that passes by." When it comes to video games there's a post by Jes for example that says "2023 gonna be a video game fr @glare.tx" and it has a character resembling something that could be out of Jet Set Radio.

Is there anything Jes that they implement about themselves into their artwork as she says "I do love spiky shit! I often use that and shading here and there. Puffy shoes, baggy jeans." You could never go wrong with a few spikes and bit a shading! Looking at the tank piece and seeing all the spikes and the shading. The spikes aren't just the spikes obviously on the tank itself, but the eyes, the teeth, the smile, the ears, the gears in the wheels, the barbed wire, and the flames out of the flame thrower from what I was able to see. Jes brought an inanimate object such as a tank to life and gave it character.

With the commissions Jes has done along with their own art work is there a way she wishes to grow "Hmmm It's pretty mixed because I haven't made a personal piece in a long while, but it does take a toll on me. Most of the art work I create now is from commissions. They see a piece I've created and say 'oh we like this piece that you did, do you think you could create something similar' here and there. I do hope it could grow to a point to where I could create something out of emotion if that makes sense? Every now and then it's just a mix of what the person wants and form my vision. Sometimes it's hard to have a balance between the two." While the commissions do go off and having 3 shirts designed by Jes. One of them was from maybe a year and a half go? It has jesters on it and a merry go round and of course the red demon Glare shirt. I also have the Barbs B Q t shirt. It's commission work and some personal work, but I can see what Jes means by wanting to create from emotion. Trying to create something new based of a design/piece created already? I can image how tough that be and could possibly also be limiting if they have to work around something that's been made already. While Jes may not created a personal piece in a while there is no rush, but may Jes find time for self-expression, for themselves. Commissions and personal, it's all amazing work.

A design for @barbs.b.q

Is there an art piece that Jes often thinks about that she would say is their favorite?

"Most definitely, I think about The Garden piece all the time. It was a personal piece that I did. It was a rough time for me at the time. I was living in San Antonio at the time and the price of my rent went up and it kinda fucked me up. I ended up moving to another city on a whim. From that piece alone I imagine like the growth to a new start in life if that makes sense. It's also the first time I used multiple colors on a piece. It just added color with this new change that I went through." A ravaged heart, a lamb shedding a single tear and dread lurking as depicted through the dark colors used in the imagery below. I just can't stop staring at it. The idea of the flames engulfing more than 1 thing. The subtle smile from the butterfly pushing through. The sporadic pops. The more I write and erase the more emotional I get looking at this piece. What do you think?
