I stumbled upon Theadora's work while I was Tropicasa. I believe it was for a brunch event? Oh yes! It was an event before I went to work at 2pm I just can't recall the name of it, but I remember it! Funny how that works, huh? I have one of their pieces on my wall. It just called out to me for some reason. Was it the style? The colors? Did it remind me of something? Looking at it, I just like it and there's nothing wrong with that. When it comes to their work they seem to be finding ways of expanding themselves creatively which is neat! One of this week's features is Theadora, @teayaax
Theadora shares with us what she enjoys to do her free time "I enjoy drawing or creating. I feel like that’s the only thing I do outside of work." Even if it may be what you enjoy. To some their hobbies can come of therapeutic y'know. From something of self-expression to relaxation. When asked about any shout-outs they would like to give they said "I do appreciate anyone who has put me down because it makes me want to do better and continue to do what I love doing."
We begin by asking Thea how she would describe her art work as she says "I can’t describe my art in the way I wish I could or the way people expect me to. People will always ask me what’s my inspiration. I can’t tell them because it’s nothing. I use art to express myself. If I feel tired I’ll draw something to represent how I feel. The different types of people I see. The things I enjoy and put my twist on it. " If there's one question I don't ask or rather I don't enjoy asking anymore. Is " what is your inspiration/influences" because I feel that it then becomes a comparison? If that makes sense. It comes down to expression of the artist or because they want to. I do enjoy the "twists" in art work out of enjoyment.
From their art style, what can be said about any personal touches Thea adds into her work as she mentions " I feel the personal touches that make art mine is always the eyes and the emotion I put in the art." She continues by saying "the eyes are a huge feature of a human. We use them to see. Without them a lot of people wouldn’t be able to visualize art. I’m grateful to have my eyes. I also feel like they can show what mood you are in. If you are tired, sad or happy." I really don't like my eyes? Maybe it's my resting bitch face or that I look upset? When I'm really not, but when my eyes open up people know I'm like excited or well in a really good mood! So I totally understand when it comes to expressions of the eyes and their messages. Sometimes I do like my eyes and that I take in what I can and see what I can.
Thea shares with us how long they've been creatively active for as she says "I’ve been doing art since I was a lil kid. My dads an artist, way better than me. My mom was too so it’s always be influence. I’d go on breaks and stop when I’d go through something traumatic instead of finding away to express myself. It’s stunt my growth with trying to make better art. Although I see that I’ve most definitely have grown n still growing. I have had different style over the years. Different interest. Learned different skills, still learning different skills. Usually teach myself unless I read a book since I’ve never taken an art class outside of middle school. So I could really only teach myself or ask my dad questions." I like that Thea mentions "usually teach myself unless I read a book since I've never taken an art class" and I remember when I interviewed Danny @meemorp_ and Alejandra @44waterliles they mentioned how reading and researching outside of a class is more important and worth. With reading you can learn the history and how it came to be rather than an art class that gives you a letter on your homework on a piece you create. There is a lot to take in when you consider resources outside of a classroom. Especially as Thea mentions her Mom and Dad being artists? That's pretty cool. Now I wonder what kind of art her parents make/made? Which ones are their favorites. As time goes by you just keep learning and growing that's for sure and with the artists that I've seen and met. Everyone is learning new styles, experimenting, skills. Very nice to see.
With the years of art under her belt does Thea have any favorite pieces? "My favorite piece I’ve ever done doesn’t really exist yet. I’m still growing as an artist and I feel like that’s why I try harder everyday is to create this master piece I wouldn’t mind being known for. I do enjoy lil things for my pieces. Although most of them I sold for super cheap or cut up the canvas and destroy it like I’m insane. I just get so upset when I spend so much time and mess up at the end. Although painting can be fixed I’ll get so heated and ruin it intentionally so I can try again and hope it’s better." There an image I saw recently on the steps of an artist being "Working on art - This sucks - I suck - Turning out better - Yeah this is shit - Wait - This is good - I'm done" It's something along the lines of that. Even at the end we may not be satisfied with what we create, it's close. Will we ever be satisfied? That must depend from artist to artist that's for sure. Will Thea ever create this "masterpiece?" Do you think she's already created such a piece and doesn't know it just yet? As the viewer may think what you want when seeing them in person and so on, but what does the artist think as you gaze upon their work. Thea ends us off by saying "I hope it's better" and in this case it will. They recently showed me a piece they created. They recreated it again. There was pieces of both that I really enjoyed. Same piece, but they both just "felt" different. She really did "fix" it and to me she felt satisfied.
With the different styles and readings done on art what does Thea wish to experiment with in when it comes to her work as she says "I’ve always wanted to learn to oil paint. Although I do not have the patience to wait for the paint to dry and go over with layers. I’d love to paint oil painting of landscapes if I could because they are so beautiful or gouache landscapes. It sounds so peaceful to travel and just paint your view." There was another artist I interviewed/spoke to @murdermitteninc and they also mentioned from what I remember how they don't have the patience for oils. I just find that so funny. I've never worked with oils so maybe that's a reason I don't understand. I do enjoy my landscapes in minecraft just kidding, but I say go for it!
Seeing Thea on flyers on the vendors spot I wondered what their experiences have been along with their feedback received "Recently while vending I got asked if I was inspired by fish. I found it a bit strange. I feel like certainly grown from my first pop up. I use to make my sticker by hand like draw each one of them. Now I make the designs on my phone and print them out. Which saves me a lot of time. I feel like it’s a learning experience for sure! Which I love. I also love meeting new people who enjoy my art. It’s really delightful. Also getting recognized feels nice." Well from their first pop up to their most recent it sounds like they are really having fun and that's important. I hope Thea continues to meet others and continue her talks about art.
From what they added to their booth from totes, stickers, prints, mushrooms, and I remember a few framed pieces like the one I currently have what else do they wish to add as they excitedly mention "I would like to create more paintings and framed work tho! Because I feel like that speak who I really am. Also love clay work. Like I’d love to learn how to make vases for fun sort of like the type Seth Rogan does but who doesn’t want to do that?!?" When it comes to framed pieces they had this to say "I stopped doing framed pieces because they were originals and I haven’t had time to make more. I do have some prints tho of the few originals I have left." If you spot any originals be sure to cop! I love love clay and especially stop motion claymations! My favorites! I look forward to future clay pieces! How exciting.
What can be said about Thea's style then and now? What has changed or how have they adapted as they explain "I feel like my style changes as years and life goes on because people change. Mood changes, growth happens. My eyes would always be easy to draw out in my style and I feel like that’s something that will never change. It fits like a glove n sort of becomes natural." That's how it be y'know. I'm sure artists have something that they can draw as well that "feels like a glove."
Thea shares her thoughts on the The Valleys local scene,
I enjoy the valley more than any other place. It’s a community compared to bigger cities I feel like it’s harder to make a community or find your people because there is so many people. Maybe I’m wrong and just comfortable. Although when I’m away in a bigger city I always miss the valley. I feel like it’s one of the only places in Texas to get a really good botana.
