I think I stumbled upon B11ce when I made a post asking about if you were a creative in the valley to DM me so I can follow you and look through your work due to private accounts I can't really tell sometimes. That's when B11ce, @b11ce sent me a DM through Instagram and that's how it started. To Check out his work you can go to his website which is in his bio over @b11ce and check out his recent post!
We begin by sharing a little bit about B11ce as he says "I'm reading a biography on the musician Sun Ra. I am inspired by how he uses his music for something more elaborate: movies, crazy performances, philosophies (that I can't claim to understand.) I suppose that's my goal as a musician, too. To make music that's part of a whole, unique world to tap into." I would agree that when it comes to learning even studying where it came from and how it's changed can help an individuals process with their work. Especially when it comes the history of it. He continues by sharing a few local creatives "I am just getting hip to the scene here, but it's pretty exciting! I wanna sing/produce on swayze's stuff (@swayzexvi), and Valley Swerve's (@valleyswerve) stuff too. SAINT CRISTIAN (@l.saintcristian) is making some jams. I am loving all the bands here: Triiine (@triiine.music), Harley's Comet (@harleyscometmusic), and La Ratera (@larateramusic) are really dope. Visual-wise, I am digging Josué Ramírez (@raw_mirez), Josie Del Castillo (@josieleila), Madison Bickerton (@madisonbickerton), Aly Serna (@trashcollage_aly), J Cruz (@theycallmecreative), and Michael Roy's (@m_r0y) work. There are also many fantastic hubs & local media groups, like Raymus (@raymus), Miraaa (@miraaamediafest), and yourself that are showing me many peoples' work. I am definitely missing a lot, but this whole scene is inspiring me for sure." I'll be sure to check out those who I don't know about, but the valley sure has a lot of creatives and they truly bring in color to our community. It's growing amazingly!
From the numerous things I see on B11ce's account what exactly is he? As he explains "I am a multi-media artist, with a focus in music: production, songwriting, and the visuals to support it. I can dabble across different mediums and instruments, and though I can't say I am technically great at all of them, I try to muster something interesting out of it. I think I'm very concept-driven, so I find projects with several ideas & mediums to be motivating. It's mostly music right now, though." Check out the posts with his music especially the most recent being "cheerleader!" I ask due to the many visual work and music that I was wondering which B11ce tackled the most but as he says "it's mostly music right now."
How exactly did he get started with his work? We each have our beginnings "A combination of music & tech was my foundation into getting in all this. My parents really blessed me with multiple gadgets when I was a kid like cameras and whatnot, so that's how I started making my own little videos. My dad also got me a drumset, and really encouraged me to pick it up. Honestly, I've been on the same trip of making stuff ever since, thankfully!" It's pretty good that his parents allowed and encouraged creativity in the household and made it fun as well! I got an acoustic guitar for my 15th birthday, but I didn't really have the drive or the motivation or the support to continue with it? I would like to learn now to express myself more, but maybe. I'm just glad that B11ce has the opportunity and the support for this.
Regarding his visuals and his work how would he like grow with it? "To tell you straight, I want to make a living off this somehow. Of course, I want my spirit to grow, and to get better at playing piano and whatnot, but I want to form a living around it. That's the ultimate goal. I don't feel worried about the art not progressing, I am experimental by nature. I know the craft will morph as I grow. But hopefully, a sustained living will flourish along with it." That certainly is the dream isn't it? To make a living off what we enjoy and have fun with it. What catches my attention is "I am experimental by nature" which is great to hear! Being able to trust and be risky with something new in the line of work. How can someone progress without trying something new? Keep it up B11ce!
On the last post regarding "Cheerleader" how did the collaboration come to be? What role did you play? As he says "My great friend Steeziak (@steeziakbeats) texted me a demo of the"cheerleader" beat, and I reworked it and added vocals. I passed it back, and he really made it shine. I never really approached production outside of my own, so taking this on as purely a songwriter was sweet. I plan on collaborating like this more often." From multi-media creative to "purely a songwriter" as mentioned earlier he isn't shy from experimenting outside of his work. With how he ends "I plan on collaborating like this more often" maybe on the creatives mentioned in the post will collaborate with B11ce one day!
From the numerous works does B11ce have a favorite? "My album Nalgaz Dulcez is my favorite project. It just involved so much learning as far as: songwriting, production, videos, etc. It really was a passion project for me to see if I can produce/write a strong album myself. It was also an accumulation of a lot things I was feeling throughout 4-5 years. It's my crazy baby." You heard the man blast "Nalgaz Dulcez" right now! I know I will!
While going through his work I noticed of course visuals and even ceramic work. Does B11ce plan to come back to this as well? "Yeah, definitely! Maybe not ceramics since I don't have the studio means for that, but definitely more digital pieces. I actually want to develop more installation-based projects, but that might be troubling with Corona. The project I have cooking right now involves a USB-gun. That's all I'll say on that." That certainly has my attention to what that could be! I look forward to that and for now all I can do is imagine it.
When asked if he could label if work into some sort of genre he mentions "Rhythm & Greenz"
B11ce shares his thoughts on the local scene,
I am truly loving what I am seeing come out of valley artists. I think it's super important to rep the Valley thing, too. You always hear of LA, NYC, etcetc---and you know what, the 956 is such a unique place that I think we are the elite. Not in a prideful, unhealthy way. We definitely have problems like anywhere. But this place is so fertile with history and culture, it's obviously a very special place. Politically, geographically, and just how hot this damn place is: we are weird as hell. The art scenes bursting out of here reflect how sick this place is, and it's only getting better. I am happy to do my part in it.
Along with some final comments,
Border Killerz out September. It involves new jams, that USB-gun I mentioned earlier, and more ;)
