This feature goes out to Amaury @purplepintura and Lovette @motherwhiterice who have moved to the big apple! There is also others who have moved, but no matter where they go they will always carry the 956 with them. Sending them many wishes and may their work continue to grow as well. From the amazing performances/music and fashion by these two individuals we wait for what's to come. These interviews were conducted for during my 1 years anniversary exhibition!
This is @motherwhiterice she worked on and created Intoku Magazine! The images are some pages within the zine and if you enjoyed it be sure to check out the full copy!
She shares with us about her work/fashion and how she wishes to grow along with it "I love what I’m doing so far and who I’ve become with it! I feel like the more things I do regarding fashion, the more I become the person I’m supposed to be. Fashion has even influenced my personality and I genuinely feel like I’m on a happy journey with life and work. I’m excited for what’s to come and words can’t even explain the amount of appreciation and love I have towards all the people that have supported and believed in me from back then to now." I hope her work continues to grow and to blossom amazingly!
When it comes to the local community and the local scene Lovette shares her thoughts "A lot of people in the valley are so expressive with what they wear, I love it. The fashion industry can unfortunately sometimes be a very cliquey and intimidating environment. But we can help each other and the community grow from that if we continue to help one another as we are now. Continue to cheer each other, applaud each other, be genuine, be kind, and things will eventually build from there." We can "cheer each other, applaud each other, be genuine," but is there anything else we can do as she continues "Fashion is beyond powerful. It’s a conversation in sexuality, culture, creativity, individuality, confidence, and influence. I’ve met a few people who have confused it as borderline materialism, narcissism, or even use it to weaponize slut shaming. In the past, those same views subconsciously stopped me from wanting to dress more and show more. I’ve had their dialogue play in my head a fair amount of times before I leave the house. But fashion is such a beautiful and versatile way of self expression, it speaks all kinds of levels. It’s wearing something and finding home in all the seams and cotton and ultimately feeling your best self. I think we can help each other by being open to the different types of things people want to wear. More so, fashion has been such a 'controversial' conversation in gender. Clothes have zero gender to themselves so it shouldn’t be such an exaggerated, jaw-dropping topic if you see your guy friend in a dress or heels (this goes both ways). It’s fuckin hot, cheers to them! Applaud them for expressing themselves as the beautiful person they’re blossoming into! Another thing I would say is to not be so critical. With fashion comes the up and downs of self-esteem. Being so critical of someone can affect their sense of identity, pile on the insecurities, and hinder them from becoming more in tune with that they like and don’t like. When we teach others to love and accept themselves as they are, the possibilities are endless and there is so much growth in store." When it comes to clothing it really is unisex. I have caught myself looking at the women's section for sweaters or t-shirts because i find them to be better or even better fitting. As mentioned we can applaud and cheer on others, but we must be sure to do this for ourselves as well. We can always love someone else, but we matter too. We too can blossom and grow. It can be hard in the environment we can be and from my personal environment it can be damaging. Just trying to express myself, but being thrown negativity at home. I wanted to share images of the magazine because fashion really speaks. It is an an expression even if its just for ourselves. Be sure to check it out!"
Up next is Amaury @purplepintura and he talks about his work and how he wishes to grow with it " Well, I’m really into having a solid funk in terms of rhythm in a song, and if I can somehow incorporate a little shoegaze-y sweet dreamyness (to call it something) then I think I have a good foundation for a song. I think that describes the latest EP’s overall vibe. In terms of growing, lately I’ve been trying to inject more texture into my songs. Artists like Edwin Gonzales and Gusto Gusto I think do this very well. I’ve also been trying to find a solid sonic identity. I’d like to someday have someone listen to the first 30 secs of one of my songs and be able to recognize me immediately. " Oooo some shoegaze how interesting! For sure they also create some good music, but the EP is really good as well! There is certainly no dull moment within the EP. Hearing it live at Bummershed was an experience. Even listening to the new track performed at Bummershed it certainly had me looking forward for what comes next. I've had the conversation with a few artists about the whole "be able to recognize me immediately." Sometimes I'm scrolling through Instagram and without looking at the usernames I can tell who it is or even out in public with stickers being seen at random locations It's fun pointing out who it is.
When I used to work with UTRGV Radio It was during the Breakfast Wrangler I played Vamos Pa Mexico and people came up to me asking "Is this Yruama?" and "Bro Yruama is the shit!" and people even from a distance knew who was playing by what they were saying with remarks such as "WOOOO" and it was interesting to see and hear for sure. As Amaury says "I'd like to someday have someone listen to the first 30 seconds of my songs and be able to recognize me immediately." Well it is happening already for sure and it's been happening for while because I haven't worked in radio in years now.
He goes on to speak about the community and what we can do to help each other "I think our scene is pretty healthy in terms of diversity of genres and sounds. What I’d say is for all artists to encourage their followers to read, share, follow, and hype up local media people who emphasize local artists like outinthe956, raymusmedia, BLASST podcast, kcyp 97.7 the city, truchatv, but not Q94.5 tho lmao" I also noticed the growth on pages sharing local creatives and I love that! On how we can help Amaury says "Sharing people’s art that you think is good. It’s awesome when you show a friend a song or a painting from a regional artist and they’re like 'wow that’s super cool' and then you ask them 'guess where they’re from' and then they’re like 'idk? Nyc? LA?' and then you’re like 'Noooo wei, they’re from here!!" Honestly this has happened to me when I have shared something local with my friends. They were quick to assume LA or NYC or just anywhere, but here. They were surprised but its like we sure do got some hidden gems in the 956 you just have to break out and do some searching as well or click into a song shared by a friend or even Instagram search the bands performing at local events. It's all by searching and it's how I was able to find such amazing artists/creatives/musicians within our area. Let us continue sharing local work and bringing a light to what they do.
As mentioned earlier let us wish them luck and may their handwork blossom! Looking forward for what comes next for the two of them!
